The Halloween Party at Cupid's Temple

And still the party continues...

Date: 10/29/97
From: Destine

Destine let Cupid lead her the center of the dance floor and as the music started they began to dance. She could see Nymph and Sinbad near by, seemingly enjoying themselves. Once more jealousy rose up in her chest.

"Stop looking like you're going to tear Nymph's head off," Cupid drawled in her ear. Destine had the grace to look embarrassed, she had no idea that she had looked so evil. She said as much to Cupid.

"Well, don't worry about it. I don't think Nymph's a threat. What's gotten into you tonight, babe?" Cupid drawled again. It drove her nuts for him to call her babe and he knew it. She just scowled at him.

"Ok, Ok, sorry. I forgot how much you hate that," he said with one of those mischievous smiles that told her that he knew very well that she hated it. Destine had to smile back despite her mood, when the God of Love smiles, how can you resist?

"Ah, there's that smile that breaks men's hearts. So, really, what's going on with you and "your, uh, friend" as you put it?"

Destine just shrugged and tried to bring up another subject. "So, it's a lovely party, isn--" but Cupid intreupted her.

"Don't try to change the subject. Answer my question. I'm still your lord after all,"

"Nothing....much," she said, still trying to skirt the subject at hand.

Cupid heaved a great sigh that told her he was fast losing patience with her trying to avoid the subject. He even went so far as to try and give her one of those "Godly Stares".

"Nothing much, huh? You've just been drinking like a fish and looking like you want to kill every priestess that looks twice at your sailor. I wouldn't call that nothing," Cupid said with a forked eyebrow.

"I haven't been looking like I want--wait...what do you mean "my sailor"? How did you know he was sailor? Have you been poking around in my mind?" Destine asked, indignant.

"No, of course not, babe. I heard you introduce him earlier as Sinbad. Nearly everyone has heard of him,"

Destine gritted her teeth together. ~There he goes with that "babe" business again~ but she said "If you've heard of him, why are you asking me such silly questions?"

At that point the music ended and Destine started to leave the dance floor only to be grabbed by the hand and nearly dragged back to stand in front of Cupid. She saw Nymph and Sinbad leave the floor. Sinbad went to the bar and Nymph went back to Darnelle ~Ateast that's one thing less to worry about~ she thought.

"I didn't say I was finished dancing with you," Cupid said, "Besides, you haven't answered my questions yet."

The music started up again and Destine threw a helpless look at the bar. Sinbad was drinking something and he looked content for the moment. ~Oh, no, he's drinking too!~ she thought ~God's help us if it's Rum and Coke or we'll *both* be in trouble!~ Cupid expertly turned in time to the music and she lost sight of Shinbad. Once again he tried to get answers from the unusually close-mouthed priestess in his arms.

"So, I'll ask you again. What's going on with you and your sailor?" Cupid asked, trying to loosen her up by using one of his heart stopping grins. He came very close to succeeding but at the last second Destine snapped back to reality.

"Noth--" Destine began but Cupid cut her off again.

"Don't tell me that "nothing's going on" when it's so obvious to everybody. Why all of a sudden is it so important for you to hide this from your God?"

Destine looked toward the floor. "I-I don't know why. It's just such a long story that it'll probaly take all night to tell." That wasn't the whole truth but she really didn't know why she was reluctant to talk about Sinbad.

"Just give me the summary then,"

Destine then began to tell of how her and her "sailor" met in a market square and of all the adventures that she had had with him and his crew.

"But," Cupid asked, "Do you love him?"

"Yes, I do love him. It doesn't have anything to do with this craziness that's going on tonight. I've loved him since the first time I set eyes on him," Destine answered. "I'll probaly *always* love him," she finished, almost too softly to hear.

The pitch of the music changed and they both knew that the song was almost over. Cupid leaned a little closer to share a few words of wisdom.

"Don't let jealousy come between the two of you. Believe me, I know what a green eyed monster can do to a relationship." At that remark Destine looked at him in puzzelment. "It's also another long story to tell," Cupid said and added when she looked like she was going to say something, "But it will keep until another time. Oh, and one more thing. No more drinking. You don't want to spoil your night with your sailor after all."

The music ended and Cupid walked Destine off the dance floor, leading her towards the bar. Kim came running up and said it was urgent that she talk with him. "I think I'll be ok now, Cupid. Thanks for the talk," Destine said. Cupid just smiled and let Kim pull him to the side so she could talk about her urgent news.

Destine walked on alone to the bar and flashed Sinbad a smile. He took a drink and smiled at her over the rim of his cup. The whole time she had been dancing with the handsome God of Love he had been close to simmering. The thought of someone else holding her that close had put him in a foul mood. Once she had left the dance floor and had started walking back towards him, his mood had improved somewhat. He was ready for this party to over with so he could have her all to himself.

"Hi, sweetheart," Destine had reached the bar and was flashing him another smile. She looked lovely with her cheeks flushed from dancing. "So, what are you drinking?" Destine asked. ~Please don't let it be Rum and Coke~ she prayed to no one in particular.

"Just some lime and water," Sinbad answered. Destine sighed with relief ~No sense in *both* of us waking up with a headache in the morning~ She didn't feel all that drunk, even from three (or was it four?) Rum and Cokes but she was sure that she'd feel it in the morning.

"I think I'll take one of those too," she said to the bartender (we have one, right?). The bartender had just set her glass in front of her when she heard shouting at the other end of the hall. It was Aphrodite, Cupid, and Ped.

"What's that all about?" Sinbad asked.

"I don't know, but it sounds like trouble. I have a bad feeling about this," Destine replied.
